Roots Nature Academy
We use mastery-based learning to ensure that every student is working at a level and pace that is right for them. For example, using self-paced progression allows each learner to internalize the concepts and advance through the curriculum at their own speed, mastering each concept before moving on to the next. When learners fully understand and internalize each concept before progressing, this promotes a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the material.
Each learner takes an adaptive diagnostic assessment when they enroll and will be matched to a curriculum that will allow them to work at their own pace. We don’t use traditional grading systems, you’ll know exactly what level of mastery your learner has reached at all times. We also use an inquiry-based approach to explore the student’s curiosities and interests instead of forcing them to learn about specific topics in specific time frames.
This helps learners stay engaged and interested at school and they actually end up learning things at a much deeper level. With our thematic units, our students will be able to ask questions and dive further into their own questions with research, either provided in centers for exploration or in a collaboration unit that will be able to expand on their self-research. We assist our learners with owning their learning and strive for them to become scholars who are capable of achieving their unique goals.
At Roots, we prioritize deep mastery during the school day so traditional homework isn’t needed. Learners have the time and space to fully engage with what they’re learning during the school day. This creates a healthier rhythm at home with more time for family, outdoor play, passions, and the subjects they genuinely enjoy. The result is a stronger love of learning and a more balanced life for both learners and their families.
Instead of traditional teaching, Guides at Roots facilitate learning by providing resources, asking questions, and guiding students throughout their learning.
This empowers students to take ownership of their learning and develop critical thinking skills.
Your learner develops independence, self-confidence, and a lifelong love for learning.
Your learner learns to develop empathy, and learn with peers of different ages and backgrounds, enhancing their social and emotional intelligence along the way.
At Roots Nature Academy, learning is a dynamic, hands-on process where learners build understanding through exploration, inquiry, and experiences from the real world. We support strong academics in literacy, math, science, social studies, and the arts while nurturing curiosity, flexible thinking, and meaningful problem-solving. Our environment encourages students to take the first step, ask questions, and think deeply.
Social-emotional growth is central to our approach. We emphasize reflection, empathy, and collaboration, so learners can understand themselves, work well with others, and make responsible decisions. Rooted in constructivist methods including Reggio Emilia, Montessori, and Project-Based Learning. We view every learner as capable, resourceful, and naturally driven to learn.
